In 2013 Rotorua’s reputation for hosting world-class events was internationally recognised with the presentation of an International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA) World Festival and Event City Award. Rotorua was in fact the only New Zealand region town in the award that year. Rotorua Night Market

Date: Every Thursday night 5pm to 9pm
Details:  Tutanekai St between Haupapa and Pukuatua Streets comes alive every Thursday from 5pm. Many market stalls are showcasing their wares giving Rotorua locals and our many visitors  the opportunity to interact with producers, chefs, artisans, artists and designers from in and around our region including existing Tutanekai St. retailers.
See, smell and taste fresh seasonal fare , be entertained by a variety of performers and be inspired by the array of local New Zealand influenced art.

Saturday morning Rotary Club Market

Date: Every Saturday – 7am to 1pm  

Kuirau Park, Corner Ranolf St .and Lake Rd.

Details: The Saturday Morning Rotorua North Rotary Market is open every Saturday of the year. Depending on the weather there are upwards of 3,000 shoppers who use the market. The colourful stalls and their goods are a tourist attraction as well as a source of bargains for the locals. There are some 40 to 50 stalls at the market selling fresh fruit and vegetables, fast food, coffee, arts and crafts, wood, clothing, souvenirs, plants, pre-loved goods, candy, popcorn and much more.

Arawa Park Race Course - Rotorua

Details: Racing Rotorua (part of the TRAC group) has raced at Arawa Park for over 100 years and has a proud association with Rotorua and the surrounding districts, with its racecourse uniquely placed in the heart of Rotorua. The Club, which hosts 12 meetings this coming season, is known for its hospitality and friendliness to visiting owners and trainers, and to overseas visitors who take the opportunity to enjoy the racing and facilities while on holiday in NZ’s “tourism capital” of Rotorua. The club boasts an excellent level of lounges, bar and betting facilities, with all patrons having free access to the main grandstand area.

Rotorua Bike Festival

Every year over 5000 entrants will take part in up to 30 events over 10 days in the world’s premier all-year-round mountain biking destination in what is known simply as Rotorua Bike Festival.

Held in February each year since 2013, the Rotorua Bike Festival brings together just about every type of event on wheels. These include the National MTB Cross Country Championships, the Revolve Rotorua Ladies Road Ride, Tykes on Trikes, a Family Fun Ride, the 16″ World Dual Slalom Champs and a variety of other biking events.

Rotorua Marathon

The Rotorua Marathon is New Zealand’s biggest and oldest marathon. It was first held in 1965 with just 16 runners competing. Today is sees several thousand runners attempt to complete a gruelling 42km circuit of Lake Rotorua.

The Rotorua Marathon starts at the Government Gardens and head out through Rotorua city, around the back of the lake over the Hamurana Hills. Runners then wind their way back towards Rotorua, completing the event by running under the historic Prince’s Gate Archway up to the finish line.

The event is held on the last Saturday in April or the first Saturday in May each year. If the Rotorua Marathon is too big a challenge, you can opt to participate in either the Half Marathon (21.1km), Quarter marathon (10.5km) or Fun Run (5.5km).

Cat Eye Moonride

Every year around 200 teams comprising over 1000 riders take part in the Moonride, one of the world’s oldest team races held in the hours of darkness.

This cycle event first started as one of several events organised as part of the Mad, Mad Mid-Winter Festival in 1194. It is held on the weekend closest to a full moon, hence the name Moonride.

Over 20 years on and the Moonride is now held in March in the stunning Whakarewarewa Forest trails. The course sees mountain bike riders lit up light Xmas trees and competing solo or in teams of 4 – 5 for either a 6, 12 or 24 hour period.
